Singing for Depression: Choir Singing Makes People Happier

This entry is part 4 of 4 in the series Singing For Depression

Choir singing makes people happier – apparently!

choir singing

Do you remember singing in the car? My sister and I used to sing on family trips. Our favourites were songs from Broadway musicals like The Sound of Music and The Music Man. Both of the stories centre around music – a powerful passtime with so many benefits. We were not miserable or fighting when we were singing. Our parents in the front seat probably got a little tired of it though. I do think my mother occasionally saying "I'd like to listen to the scenery for awhile."

You don't have to be in a choir to benefit from choir singing. Just two or more people belting out a song can have the same benefits.

How about you? Do you need proof or have you already tried it and found it to be helpful?

How about "15 Reasons You Need To Start Singing Every Minute Of Every Day".

singing for depressionWhat does this bricklayer have to do with singing for depression? Nothing really but it brings back a pleasant music memory for me. One time I had a bricklayer in my house laying some bricks for our fireplace. He sang all day and he was good too! It ministered to me. It is a vivid memory which I have not forgotten.

Now I am not suggesting you lay bricks for depression but I am suggesting you try singing as a coping strategy.

Singing for Depression: Part One, Singin in the Rain

This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series Singing For Depression

"Singin in the Rain" What a wonderful image. Did you see that old movie? This scene with Gene Kelly has become famous. The whole idea of singing in the rain is delightful. Typically we do not sing in the rain. We might run for cover or pull our coat tightly around us. Maybe we will decide that our day has been spoiled by the rain. But do we sing? The two really do not naturally go hand in hand.

That is what makes this image so special. It is not typical human behaviour to sing when life rains on you.

But that is what I am suggesting for a depression strategy this week. I am recommending that we all try a little singing.
