See that bay window? It has two rocking chairs where I spend many happy hours. This second floor two bedroom apartment is where my day begins. Every morning I leave it for 30 minutes or more to go on my small adventure. I love my morning walk. The small Ontario town I live in offers several precious diversions for me. Walking for depression saves my life, every day.

So, what kinds of boots are you going to need in order to EXERCISE FOR DEPRESSION?

Are you convinced yet that exercise would be a good addition to your recovery and maintenance strategies?

My own exercise of choice is walking. Even when I am feeling edgy and/or depressed when I start my walk, I can notice my mood slowly change about half way into the walk. Some walks are better than others. But all walks are good. I couldn't handle my life at all without my walks. I walk alone. That works best for me. My brain seems to go to good places when I walk. I love my walks. I couldn't give it up.

It was a popular song in my day. There wasn't a girl around who wouldn't love singing that song if she had been mistreated or dumped by her boyfriend. There is something powerful about the image of walking all over someone who you feel has walked all over you.

Any chronic illness is a challenge and depression is no exception. Strength is required to endure the painful emotions and challenging out of control moods.
 
The best way to get some strength to endure such an illness is exercise!
 
Apparently exercise is better than antidepressants. You may want to read some more about that in an excellent article

My Favourite Walk for Depression

womanwalkingOne of my favourite depression getaways is walking. Even on a bad day I force myself to walk. A walk will often be the best part of my day, unless one of the grandchildren comes to visit!

I would like to describe for you one of my favourite walks. It is in a nearby city where I once lived. It starts with a park.

I park my car and enter into the fairly flat but well treed park. There is a walking path, a little lake, a stream and people all around enjoying the outdoor space in the middle of the city. The pathway goes over a creek, then over a liftlocks, and continues around the lake. It is open and spacious but intimate and friendly at the same time. You can hear and see the city around you but you feel protected from it.
